Haleh Niazmand's Studio:
From Far Away
1996

From Far Away is a body of narrative art inspired by the stories of the older generation of Iranian women. These works address issues surrounding compulsory veiling, the tradition of arranged marriage, virginity, and the lack of equal rights under Islamic law.
My intention with this body of work is not to speak solely of the conditions of women under Islam. Instead, by using what is familiar in my culture, I hope to foster a dialogue about many existing parallels in the experience of women globally. Aside from comparisons and patronizing expressions of the West, our ultimate liberation will not rest in our supremacist divisions but through understanding, respect, validation, and solidarity against the universal brutality of patriarchy.
